What is the difference between a qualification and a statement of attainment?
A qualification means a formal certification in the VET sector by a Registered Training Organisation where a person has achieved all the units of competency or modules.
A statement of attainment means formal certification in the VET sector by a Registered Training Organisation where the person has achieved:
- Part of a qualification; or
- One or more units of competency from a nationally endorsed training package; or
- All the unit of competency of modules comprising learning outcomes for an accredited course that does not meet the requirements for a qualification
What is an RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) means recognition of competencies currently held, regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred. RPL assesses the individual’s prior required learning to determine the extent to which that individual is currently competent against the required learning outcomes, competency outcomes, or standards for entry to, and/or partial or total completion of, a qualification.
What is the difference between RPL and Credit Transfer?
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) means recognition of competencies currently held, regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred. RPL assesses the individual’s prior required learning to determine the extent to which that individual is currently competent against the required learning outcomes, competency outcomes, or standards for entry to, and/or partial or total completion of, a qualification.
Credit transfer means the advanced standing obtained from prior agreements between institutions or organisations on the credit value of specific courses, units of competency or modules. Thus, RPL is recognition or prior competencies regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred.
What happens where an RPL application fails?
The student will be informed as soon as possible whether the application has been successful, unsuccessful or whether further information is required. There is no “pass or fail” for the RPL process; there will either be sufficient evidence to support competence or there will be insufficient evidence. Where the RPL process has been completed and remains unsuccessful then the applicant must complete the course. The process includes a Portfolio of evidence.
